Employers' unawareness of or disregard for the illegality of the practice, however, is partly born out of a lack of consequences. Although Brazil has a robust legal framework in place, with significant penalties for perpetrators (including the seizure of property), enforcement is very low.

Despite the large influx of Islamic slaves, most of the slaves in Brazil were brought from the Bantu regions of the Atlantic coast of Africa where today Congo and Angola are located, and also from Mozambique. In general, these people lived in tribes.

However, the most common form of punishment was whipping. Depending on the severity of the crime or offense, slaves would recieve a specific number of lashings, typically ranging from 100 to 300. In some cases, after being whipped, the flesh would then be cut and sprinkled with pepper and salt to increase the pain.

The Middle Passage itself lasted roughly 80 days on ships ranging from small schooners to massive, purpose-built "slave ships." Ship crews packed humans together on or below decks without space to sit up or move around. Without ventilation or sufficient water, about 15% grew sick and died.
