FTZII+teleconverter?

Aug 16, 2022

Does anyone know if when using the FTZII adpater you can use an F-Mount teleconverter like the 1.4x on it too, attached to the F-Mount lens?

I tried it with a AF-S 80-200,1.7 TC, FTZ(1) and it worked. The IQ was not what I wanted but it functioned.

Yes, if you wish to teleconvert F mount lenses, using F mount teleconverters is the way you have to do it. F lens -> F tele -> FTZ -> Z camera.

I assume you ask this option as apposed to using a Z tele, which you cannot do. The Z tele won't work in front of the FTZ (So F lens -> FTZ -/-> Z tele -> Z camera, this doesn't work). I can't speak personally for the x1.4 Z tele, but the x2.0 Z tele physically doesn't even fit with the FTZ.

I used my original FTZ, F-mount TC1.4iii, and 200-500 for several hundred images the past week. No reason not to … and the FTZii should work the same.

Careful with “tele” - that is a common abbreviation for “telephoto lens.” TC is the common short term for a teleconverter. At first I thought you were putting two telephoto lenses in there…

Neither Z TC will work with the FTZ. The FTZ has a baffle that gets in the way of the protruding TC front lens elements. If you Dremel-tooled the baffle so the lens will fit, the camera detects an invalid lens combination and won’t work. One poster got it to work by unseating the lens slightly so the electrical pins no longer line up, but then you’re exposing a potentially expensive lens to loss because it’s not fully mounted.

and on the Z50 that's a 1000mm lens which is great for capturing atmospheric heat distortion here in Florida.

The 200-600 better be good.

Yes - any F-mount lens that accepted a TC can be used with the FTZII or FTZ adapter.

Yes, I've used it many a time with superb results. In fact, the TC probably works better on ML than on a DSLR due to no AF fine tune issues.

The lens and TC combo would perform equally on a DSLR with a comparable sensor. The FTZ has no effect on IQ.

You misunderstood him he was saying the 1.7x teleconverter resulted in image quality he was happy with. He said 1.7 TC.

Very encouraging.

Do you see any cons using F-mount with the Z-mount adaptor other than the extra length?

The thought of swapping all the lenses day 1 is a job stopper.

None whatsoever.

I swapped mine over a period of time and some as they were released. I would sell the F mount version and then get the Z mount version.

AF on mirrorless is better with TC as combinations up to F11 etc becomes usable in good light. AF is also more accurate with zooms as af fine tune could usually only be done for one focal length & 1 focus distance.

RichardStringer, You can remove a tab on the nikon tc1.4 with dremel tool or file that should likely allow fitment of af-p 70-300e if there are no protuding lens elements. I tried it with modified tc14-e ii with the older af-s 70-300G, but image quality and AF suffered to much on a D7200 back then.
The tc tab modification also allows me to use my Sigma 120-300 os with the nikon tc14-e ii instead of only sigma tc’s. I have the non sport os version that is not officially compatible with ftz, but works fine with and without nikon TC.

It used to be only fast primes Ie f2.8 & f4 lenses that took well to teleconverters, but newer zoom lenses like 200-500, z100-400 & slow primes like 500pf f5.6 with 1.4 tc is much more usuable than with dslrs that were limited to centre only af point at F8.

The tc modification is at own risk, but there are several good guides on the internet. Just make sure mount ring is free from any metal filings so that cannot enter tc or lens.

I guess now I just need to get a decent price for my heavily used D850 and D500.

The plan would be to get a Z9 since I shoot sports.

If I can get $1000 for my 2 cameras together, I would be doing well.

I got $875 for my 750 (less than 40k on the shutter)...so you should get more than $1000 for both of those...unless they have 100k or more shutter activations.
