Future Engineers :: Future Creatures Challenge :: Gallery :: The Evolution of Capybara (2024)

Capybaras are mammals that evolved from the Hydrocho*rus hydrochaeris. The capybara species were discovered in Africa over 80 million years ago before it made its journey to South America 40 million years later. Our first illustration shows the present-day capybara with long fur, small legs, and small ears. These features allow the animal to adapt to their natural environment as they spend a large amount of time in water and swamps. Our second illustration shows the potential appearance of a capybara in 100 years. We have reduced the size of the animal because the rise in temperature causes animals to consume less food due to the extinction of many animals. However, we decided to increase the size of their legs and ears because it helps to dissipate more heat into the surrounding air.
