Can you use F-mount lenses on Nikon Z? ›

Use approx. 360 different F-mount NIKKOR lenses on a Z series camera with the Mount Adapter FTZ. Nikon Z6 full-frame mirrorless digital camera, Mount Adapter FTZ and AF-S Fisheye NIKKOR 8-15mm f/3.5-4.5E ED.

The F-mount version weights 1000 grams (1 Kg) while the Z version is 650 grams. There were a lot of great F-mount lenses before, of course, but the wider Z lenses are even better. You don't need to replace everything, at least not at once, but I would suggest getting some wide Z lenses first. I like my 24-70mm/f2.

Nikon has made some incredibly sharp and affordable Z-Mount f/1.8 prime lenses, plus a number of pro-level f/1.2 prime lenses such as the Nikkor Z 85mm f/1.2 S that cost anything up to six times the price of f/1.8 alternatives, in the region of $3,000 / £3,000 / AU$4,200.

AF-I, AF-S, AF-P lenses: fully compatible (but AF-I lenses can't be used with the focus stack shooting feature). G and D type lenses with screw drive autofocus: do not autofocus, otherwise fully compatible. The FTZ Adapter does not have the motor necessary to focus these lenses, thus they must be focused manually.

Worst of all, if you're using a tripod and need to switch between native and adapted lenses, you'll have to move the tripod plate from the body to the adapter and vice versa. Because there's not enough clearance to have a tripod plate on both the FTZ adapter and the body.

It's a slim lens and one with excellent optics, but pros should likely turn to the Nikkor Z 24-70mm F2. 8 S—it's one of the best standard zooms you can get for any system. If you're after more value, consider the Z 24-120mm F4 S, it's a fantastic choice for day-to-day photography, or the $1,200 28-75mm F2.

S. The S-line lenses are optimized for Nikon full frame mirrorless cameras. They also have a Z mount. The letter S in the line stands for Slim. These lenses offer high image quality.

At my LCS today, and I heard that Nikon's Z lenses when mounted on their Z cameras provide the best image quality, when compared to a comparable non-Z Nikon lens mounted on a Z camera w/the FTZ adapter. That seems like complicated way how to say, that Z lenses are better. Yes, they are.

Nikon Z APS-C mirrorless cameras

If you want an affordable lens for your APS-C mirrorless camera, you can choose a DX lens. It's often more compact and has a lightweight design. Because and APS-C sensor is smaller than a full-frame, it has a crop factor of 1.5.

First off let me say the Nikon ecosystem has worked pretty flawlessly for me. All my F mount glass works on my Z50, and the Z6/Z7 that I have used and with that you get extremely quick and accurate auto focus on all of those AF-S lenses. This includes using the Z50 with the FTZ adapter and the Nikon TC on a 300mm F/4.

All 35mm SLR and DSLR cameras are technically 'F' mounts, they're referred to this because the first popular Nikon camera model that used this bayonet mount was the 'Nikon F'. So even if the Nikkor lens you have is marked AI, AI-S, AF-D, E, G, etc, the mount the lens itself uses is still the Nikon F mount.
