What is the difference between FTZ and FTZ 2 adapter? ›

Introduction. The FTZ and FTZ II are the same, except that the FTZ II has no tripod foot so it's easier to use with the Z9 and it's large grip. Otherwise these are the same adapters and I won't mention any more about one versus the other; they each work exactly the same as the other.

On the bright side, Nikon is right to state that there is no loss of sharpness when using the FTZ adapter versus natively using the F-mount lens on a DSLR. We tested several lenses on both the D850 and the Z7 with the FTZ adapter, and the results were consistent – both images were equally sharp each time.

The Mount Adapter FTZ allows long-time Nikon users to continue utilizing their existing NIKKOR F lenses seamlessly with the new system. Image quality equivalent to using the Nikon mirrorless camera system is ensured, maximizing the optical performance of each NIKKOR F lens.

Is F mount lens precision and performance reduced when used with an FTZ mount adapter on a Z-series camera? No. There are no changes to focal length(s) or aperture value(s) and lens performance is the same as when it is mounted on a D-SLR.

If you really don't want a tripod mount the FTZ II is logically the better choice. It is a great pity that the FTZ II is without a built-in motor. As a result, it lacks the screw drive needed to autofocus older AF-D lenses. However, if you have enough of the newer AF-S and AF-P lenses you will be perfectly happy.

Aside from the new NIKKOR Z DX lenses, you get seamless compatibility with all Z mount lenses. And if you have F-mount lenses and accessories in your bag, you can use them too.

The F-mount version weights 1000 grams (1 Kg) while the Z version is 650 grams. There were a lot of great F-mount lenses before, of course, but the wider Z lenses are even better. You don't need to replace everything, at least not at once, but I would suggest getting some wide Z lenses first. I like my 24-70mm/f2.

Use your DSLR lenses

F-stop, or aperture, specifically controls the size of the opening in the lens. With a larger opening (or a smaller f-stop number) you'll allow more light to enter. With a smaller opening (or a larger f-stop number) you'll allow less light to enter.

The T2 adapter, sometimes called a T2-ring, was created to overcome the alignment flaw of the T adapter. A T2 adapter is made from two concentric rings. The outer ring includes the camera-specific mount. The inner ring attaches to the T thread. The two rings are connected by three set screws.
