What does FRP mean? (2024)

Note: The following information applies to all GSM certified devices

FRP stands for: Factory Reset protection.

FRP protects the device from access and use in the event of loss or theft. The device can only be used if the user knows the account details of the device.

How and when is FRP activated?

FRP is activated as soon as the user enters a Google account for the device.

When does FRP take effect?

FRP takes effect when the device is not reset via the settings but via a key combination. Although the device and PIN are reset, the user is forced to connect the device to the Internet and enter the Google account and password when starting up. Skipping this process is not permitted.
IMPORTANT: The device may only be restarted with the Google account that was previously used on the device.

How can the device still be reset?

The manufacturer or service centre can make most devices (there are exceptions) usable again by reinstalling the operating system. As the FRP/theft protection is bypassed in this case, ownership must be proven by an invoice. An invoice from a private party (e.g. Ebay) is not sufficient here.

How can a company prevent users from carrying out a factory reset on their devices?

Mobile devices can be managed via MDM systems. With a MDM system, the IT administrator can set up a centralised second Google account on the devices for administrative access. A reset is only possible via this account.

The use of Google Zero Touch is also interesting for IT.

How do I reset the device to factory settings properly?

The only way to properly reset a device to factory settings is via the system settings (if not blocked by IT). If your device is unlocked, select:

What does FRP mean? (2)System
What does FRP mean? (3)Reset Options
What does FRP mean? (4)Erase all Data (factory reset)

ATTENTION: Read the displayed instructions carefully. On some devices, the Google account is not automatically removed and must be manually deleted first.
