In the Know: Your Guide to Watching the 2024 Play It Again Sports Jonesboro Open presented by Westside Discs with Top Storylines & Stats
The Tour returns to Arkansas! The 2024 Play It Again Sports Jonesboro Open presented by Westside Discs will debut a revamped Disc Side of Heaven course layout with new starting and ending holes around the well-loved “party hill” spectator area.
The new hole one (previously hole 14) will feature a full-power downhill shot leading to the famous elevated basket. The new finishing hole (old hole 5) is all about risk v. reward, with competitors having to choose between a full send or a safe layup short of the OB-protected green. Will this new course layout produce the same playoffs that we’ve seen in the past? Only time will tell.
As the event enters its 8th year on the Disc Golf Pro Tour circuit, it solidifies its status as one of the longest-running DGPT stops, having been on Tour since the DGPT’s second-ever season in 2017. . This year’s edition promises excitement with a blend of tradition and innovation. Jonesboro has witnessed remarkable feats in the FPO division, including Paige Pierce’s record-setting 1059-rated round in 2018. Meanwhile, in the MPO division, Calvin Heimburg and Ricky Wysocki have each claimed victory three times, adding to the event’s storied history. With past playoff battles and hard-fought victories on the previous layout, anticipation runs high for another thrilling showdown this season.

FPO LOOKAHEAD – Battle for the top!
Jonesboro has witnessed both runaway victories and photo-finish playoffs, with four FPO winners clinching triumphs by an impressive margin of over 8 strokes. Yet, 2023’s FPO contest was decided in a thrilling playoff (Mertsch v. King). Notable standouts include Kristin Tattar’s commanding 10-stroke victory in 2022, marking the largest margin of victory in the season despite being a standard 3-round event.
A modified layout adds some intrigue this year, potentially favoring either blowout wins or a tightly contested race. The event’s reputation for high-caliber performances is underscored by the streak of 1000+ rated events by all five Major/Elite winners this season, a testament to the fierce competition.
Kat Mertsch seeks to secure her first win of this season while also securing her spot as defending champion in her home state. Other contenders like Hailey King, Holyn Handley, Ella Hansen, and Valerie Mandujano also vie for their first victories this season. The battle for the top remains intense with Missy Gannon, Ohn Scoggins, and Kristin Tattar leading the standings with consistent podium finishes. As the tournament unfolds on the new layout, anticipation builds around the treacherous closing hole, promising an electrifying climax to this prestigious event.
FPO round 1 feature card: Kat Mertsch, Sai Ananda, Kristin Tattar, Lykke Lorentzen.
FPO round 2 feature card: Hailey King, Rebecca Cox, Raven Klein, Ohn Scoggins.
MPO LOOKAHEAD – Will AB win back-to-back DGPT tournaments?
Defending champion Calvin Heimburg aims to continue his dominance. He has secured victory in three of the last four years at the Jonesboro Open and finished second in the other. Heimburg’s track record at Jonesboro is formidable, and he’s only missed 1 op 10 finish in thelast 18 Major/Elite events since his last win in 2023.
However, Anthony Barela’s scorching start to the season presents a formidable challenge, fresh off his second DGPT win at the Texas State Championships. Barela is the first MPO player since 2021 to win their first two career DGPT events in a single season since Adam Hammes. With the addition of a new layout, expect fireworks as these top contenders and others like Gannon Buhr vie for supremacy in what promises to be an electrifying tournament.
MPO round 1 feature card: Calvin Heimburg, Matthew Orum, Ricky Wysocki, Anthony Barela.
MPO round 2 feature card: Ben Callaway, Jared Stoll, Albert Tamm, Gannon Buhr.
