2024 RBC Heritage: One-and-Done Picks & Predictions (2024)

2024 RBC Heritage: One-and-Done Picks & Predictions (1)

The RBC Heritage is set to get underway as the fifth Signature Event of the 2024 PGA Tour season. Since it’s been designated as an elevated event, there won’t be a cut line enforced against a field of 69 golfers who qualified to play at Harbour Town Golf Links.

Ball-striking is always imperative to succeed on the PGA Tour, but it’s more emphasized at an event like RBC Heritage. With tight fairways, coastal winds on Hilton Head Island, and greens that average 3,700 square feet on average, hitting the fairways, avoiding errant lies, and approaching the green in regulation with consistency is the best recipe to contend on the leaderboard.

We’ve seen a playoff in two straight RBC Heritage events, which both featured Jordan Spieth. The Texan beat Patrick Cantlay in 2022 but lost on a three-hole playoff to Matt Fitzpatrick in 2023.

Big Guns

Scottie Scheffler
If you somehow still have Scottie Scheffler in your pick’em leagues, he’s essentially a must-start from here on out . In 2023, Scheffler recorded a T11 finish at RBC Heritage, starting 9-under-par before finishing just 3-under-par during his final two rounds. The World No. 1 is currently fist in strokes gained: approach, second for strokes gained: off-the-tee, and fifth strokes gained around the green. He’s a machine and warrants being inserted into this one-and-done format until further notice.

Patrick Cantlay
It’s been a disappointing stretch for Patrick Cantlay lately, but the “Ice Man” returns to one of his most successful events at Harbour Town. Despite falling out of the top-20 in three consecutive events entering the RBC Heritage, Cantlay has logged solo third-place and runner-up finishes at this venue since 2022. Ranked fifth in going for the green hit rate and 28th in birdie or better conversion rate, his pedestrian stats wont hold the Californian back at Harbour Town this week. He’s a good candidate to deploy in one-and-done leagues, especially since he’s been underperforming lately, meaning other league mates will be hesitant to use Cantlay.

Secondary Options

Tommy Fleetwood
T15 and T10 finishes at RBC Heritage for Tommy Fleetwood in the past two seasons show how good the Englishman performs with his driver and irons during this event. Fleetwood is still searching for his first PGA Tour outright win, robbed of victory at the RBC Canadian Open a year ago by Nick Taylor’s 70-foot birdie putt. Already with three top-ten finishes in seven events during 2024, Fleetwood ranks 24th in total driving and 32nd in total putting. His irons have been hit or miss, but T7 and T3 finishes at Valero and the Masters have Fleetwood trending up into this event, which could give him enough momentum to find his way to the winning podium on Sunday at Harbour Town.

Cameron Young
After showing out with a third-place finish in his debut at RBC Heritage in 2022, Cameron Young regressed with a T51 finish in 2023, failing to go under par in the first and final rounds. Young has seven runner-up finishes in only three years since joining the PGA Tour, and one of these came recently at Valspar, where he imploded late to seal his first PGA Tour outright win. Ranked 15th strokes gained on approach and 17th strokes gained off-the-tee, Young is a great asset to use in survivor contests and pick’em leagues this week in his third appearance at Harbour Town Golf Links.

Sneaky Plays

Mathieu Pavon
Frenchman, Mathieu Pavon, ranks inside the top-40 for strokes gained on approach, putting, and off-the-tee. He’s a phenomenal putter and does nearly everything right, which is why Pavon won the 2024 Farmers Insurance Open earlier this season, along with a solo third-place finish at Pebble Beach the very next week. After struggling during a three-event stretch prior to the Masters, Pavon turned in a T12 finish at Augusta National, so he’s worth using during his debut at RBC Heritage this week.

Taylor Moore
We watched Taylor Moore record a top-11 finish at RBC Heritage last season. Now, the 30-year-old American is ranked 16th greens in regulation percentage, 25th for total birdies, and 54th for bogey avoidance in 2024. Moore tends to start and finish strong, so without a cut line to worry about, maybe he’ll have lower scores in the middle rounds to stay in contention. He’s also 34th in par 4 scoring, and there are 11 par 4 holes at Harbour Town, making Moore worth a designation in one-and-done leagues.

Favorite One-And-Done: Will Zalatoris

Will Zalatoris returns to Harbour Town for the first time since finishing 42nd in 2021. The Californian is among the best ball-strikers on the PGA Tour right now, ranking eighth strokes gained on approach, plus he’s also 20th in total driving. This is a great combination to possess at the RBC Heritage event, although his putting will need to improve even on a course where it’s less emphasized due to the smaller green sizes and slower speeds than we saw at Augusta National. Zalatoris is top-25 for strokes gained: tee-to-green, so even though the flat stick and short game aren’t firing on all cylinders yet, his ability to hunt flag sticks and stay in fairways will pay dividends during this Signature Event.
