UCSF Medical Center, Stanford Hospital, Kaiser Santa Clara ranked among top hospitals in U.S. (2024)

Hats off to five Bay Area hospitals ranked among the best in the nation in a new report from Newsweek and global market research company Statista Inc.

UCSF Medical Center ranked at number five. The famed San Francisco hospital, which has 782 patient beds, earned a score of 92 out of 100. Stanford Health Care placed at 13. The Stanford Hospital, which has 477 beds, nabbed a rating of 90.3. Mountain View’s El Camino Hospital came in at number 129 with a score of 75.3. Mills-Peninsula Medical Center scored 73.8 and came in at number 164. Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center earned a 72.5 rating and posted at number 190.

For the rankings, analysts examined 1,000 hospitals with at least 100 inpatient beds across 11 countries primarily selected based on “standard of living/life expectancy, population size, number of hospitals and data availability,” as Newsweek noted.

Researchers then collected recommendations from more than 4,000 international and national medical experts as well as results from patient surveys and data on hospital quality and hygiene before determining the best of the best. Hospitals were then divided by and ranked within their respective countries, with 226 facilities showcased on the U.S. roster.

”This is a tribute to Kaiser Permanente caregivers and our systems,” said Chris Boyd, Senior Vice President and Area Manager of Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara. “It’s where our expertise, our technology, and our compassion come together to provide Kaiser Permanente members with outstanding safety.”

Many of the same Bay Area hospitals, including UCSF, Stanford and Kaiser, were also on the U.S. News and World Report rankings, which were also recently released.

Newsweek also featured a list of the top 10 hospitals around the globe. The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, earned the top spot, followed by Ohio’s Cleveland Clinic. Singapore General Hospital, the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Germany’s Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin rounded out the top five in the world.
