CPMC Mission Bernal Campus & Orthopedic Institute
CPMC’s Mission Bernal Campus & Orthopedic Institute promotes safe and peaceful healing in a green, environmentally sustainable setting.
This 120-bed hospital is built to cut greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the use of energy and water:
- 50,000 gallons of rainwater will be captured for irrigation and to dissipate heat from the building’s rooftop cooling towers.
- Low-flow plumbing will save over 1 million gallons of water each year.
- A new pedestrian plaza will provide an urban oasis with permeable landscape that will drain approximately 360,000 gallons of storm water annually from the storm and sewer system.
- Inside, sustainable materials used in flooring, pain, furniture, cabinets and carpet eliminate off-gassing of harmful fumes.
Seismic Safety
The building is built to withstand strong earthquakes and function fully off the city’s grid in the event of power outage:
- The new hospital campus uses buckling-resistant braced frames, a technology that will give the structure lateral stability in case of an earthquake. This system involves steel braces that are designed to yield in case of tension or compression, to prevent the building’s frame from buckling.
- Two massive generators will restore power within 10 seconds in the event of a power outage. Each generator is powerful enough to provide electricity to nearly 3,000 homes. And 34,000 gallons of fuel tanks are on site to power the two generators for up to four days.
Built for Secure Healing
Mission Bernal is designed to be a smart hospital that uses technologies to speed healing and protect patients.
- All 120 private rooms feature an integrated communications system that allows patients to talk with their healthcare team, view educational material about their condition, and watch entertainment.
- Automated systems admit visitors and protect newborns.
- Real-time data verifies that staff wash hands going in and out of each patient’s room.
- Pneumatic tubes track supplies, which are quickly and securely transported between floors.
Our goal is to provide remarkable care, remarkably close to your home.
